City Property For Sale
The City of Mount Vernon is listing the current Public Works building, located at 1040 2nd Avenue NW, for sale. Proceeds from this sale will help fund infrastructure upgrades and the interior build-out of the new Public Works facility on Bryant Road.
Sealed bids will be accepted at Mount Vernon City Hall until Friday, October 31st at 3:00pm.

2025 Sidewalk Improvements / Sept-Nov 2025
UPDATE: 10/21/25 Crews continue to work on Phases 4 & 5 early this week, moving to Phase 6 in the northeast quadrant on Thursday or Friday, depending on weather. This includes properties east of Hwy 1 and north of 1st Street.

Crews will be working on sidewalk improvements this fall with work starting on the west side, moving east. Sidewalk closures will be marked with caution tape, signs and/or barricades, with closures spanning multiple days.
Residents are encouraged to identify possible alternative routes or pathways prior to construction beginning.
The City will be providing regular updates on this website to identify timing of each phase.
Hydrant Flushing – Week of Sept. 22
The City will be flushing hydrants during the week of September 22-25th. Residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure and/or temporary discoloration. We appreciate your patience during this process, which is a routine maintenance item for municipal water systems.
Uptown Streetscape Improvement Project
The City has initiated a Streetscape Master Plan project for Uptown Mount Vernon, IA. This plan will serve as a vision for the future design of Uptown for 1st Street from 3rd Avenue SW to B Avenue SE, as well as the adjoining North Alley area. Stay tuned for more information.

Congratulations to all 4 fall Mustang sports teams for making state playoffs. Cross country has already placed 2nd for boys and 3rd for girls. Good luck to all athletes in winter sports.
Thank you to the middle school students for their leaf raking project for senior citizens as well as Memorial Park. Leaf pickup has started for all citizens so get them raked to the curb.
Stonebrook is graded and seeded.
The “seedling 1/8th mile” Interurban Trail has been poured by Public Works staff.
Nov. 1 & 2 weekend – Great entertainment with the Chili Cookoff on Nov. 1 with sculpture park dedication of 3 new features. Uptown Honorees was on Nov. 2 recognizing 5 citizens for their lifetime achievements.
Nov. 4 – Be sure to exercise your civic duty and vote.
Dec. 6 – Magical Mount Vernon on this Saturday Dec. 6 from 2-7 PM. Join your friends and family with this newly styled event.
