New legislation regarding the use of fireworks was signed by the governor with an effective date of July 1, 2025.
City offices will be closed on Friday, July 4, 2025, in celebration of Independence Day. Residents with Friday refuse and yard waste service will have pick-up on Saturday, July 5th. Otherwise, normal business hours resume Monday, July 7th at 7:00 a.m.
Please note that City Hall (213 First St NW) will remain open 24 hours throughout the holiday to serve as a cooling center, if there is excessive heat.
Smart streetlights have been installed uptown which will begin operating 24/7 over the holiday weekend, pending necessary adjustments. The LED banners will remain off during this same time period. System adjustments will continue into next week, at which point the lights will return to a regular operating schedule. We appreciate your patience and understanding while City staff and contractors work to optimize the system.
Sealed proposals will be received by the City of Mount Vernon by the City Clerk at 213 First Street NW, Mount Vernon, Iowa 52314, until 2:00 p.m. on the 17th day of July, 2025, for the construction of the 2025 Sidewalk Improvements project.
