Executive Director

Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group (CDG)

Mount Vernon, Iowa (pop. 4,506), a progressive and historic community in southeast Iowa, is seeking a full-time Executive Director of the CDG. The executive director coordinates all program activities, committees, volunteers, and daily operations, including downtown economic vitality and tourism programs, utilizing the Main Street America’s Main Street Approach™.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, outgoing individual who is well-organized, comfortable speaking in public, and capable of functioning independently. Candidates will possess excellent written/verbal communication skills and general knowledge of Word, Excel, Google Workspace, social media and online forms/programs.

Must have degree or equivalent experience in marketing/communications, finance, design, planning, public administration, retailing, non-profit administration, or small business development. Valid Iowa drivers license required. Salary range for this full-time position is $40,000-$60,000 annually, depending upon qualifications. City employee benefits package included.

ABOUT MOUNT VERNON-LISBON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT GROUP

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group (CDG) is an umbrella organization that encompasses the roles of a traditional Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development and Marketing and Tourism activities and projects. In addition, the CDG is involved in the Mount Vernon Main Street Iowa program, developed by the Iowa Department of Economic Development. The CDG mission is to “develop and promote our business environment, including but not limited to our Main Street District, and enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve.” The Mount Vernon Main Street program is a two-time GAMSA semi-finalist.

Operator Public Works Department

The City of Mt. Vernon is accepting applications to fill an opening in the Public Works Department.   The Operator will assist in day-to-day operations in the street department and is under the direction of the Lead Operator and Public Works Director.

The successful candidate will need to have knowledge of practices, techniques, equipment, tools, materials, and supplies used in street construction, maintenance, and repair.  Entry level knowledge of safety regulations, protocols, principles, practices and procedures for street construction, maintenance, and repair; ground maintenance and erosion repair control are preferred but not required.  Candidates will possess the ability to learn and follow techniques in excavation, water main repair, park maintenance and snow removal. Candidates will be responsible for maintaining a positive attitude with staff and the public as well as a willingness to learn and to work with others in a team-oriented environment.

Applicants must have a High School diploma or GED.  Applicants must have the ability to maintain a valid Iowa Driver’s license, CDL certification with air brakes or ability to obtain CDL with air brakes and pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.

Seasonal Summer Positions

The City of Mount Vernon is looking for seasonal help and mower operators to aid in ground and parks maintenance work.  This position will be 30 – 40 hours a week Monday to Friday.  Candidates will need to possess a strong work ethic, accountability, yard maintenance knowledge, be capable of operating a weed trimmer, rake, shovel, etc., along with the ability to learn new practices and follow directions.  Applications can be found on the city website www.mtvernon-ia.gov or at City Hall.  Applications due by March 22nd.  Must be 18 years old to apply.

The seasonal mower positions will require a candidate with prior experience operating turf mowing equipment. This individual would be responsible for mowing city parks, along with city owned property. Qualified individuals would have previous experience operating zero turn mowers, along with other lawn equipment, and knowledge of preventative maintenance for mowing equipment. This position can, pending weather,  run from March to November, with an average of 30-40 hours per week. A complete job description can be found on the city website www.mtvernon-ia.gov.
