Chalk the Walk

Every first weekend in May, more than 200 artists flock to Mount Vernon to fill the city with art using the streets as their canvas.
Chalk the Walk is Iowa’s largest Madonnari — or street painting — festival. Every year, more than 200 professional and amateur artists come to Mount Vernon to fill our Main Street with colorful chalk art. Attendees are invited to watch as the painting takes shape. Once artists have completed their works, the public will get the chance to vote for their favorites. The top three artists who receive the most votes will receive a cash prize. Participating artists must register in advanced. However, kids and families can practice their Madonnari skills in a designated area.
