The City of Mount Vernon is listing the current Public Works building, located at 1040 2nd Avenue NW, for sale. Proceeds from this sale will help fund infrastructure upgrades and the interior build-out of the new Public Works facility on Bryant Road.
Sealed bids will be accepted at Mount Vernon City Hall until Friday, October 31st at 3:00pm.

Crews will be working on sidewalk improvements this fall with work starting on the west side, moving east. Sidewalk closures will be marked with caution tape, signs and/or barricades, with closures spanning multiple days.
Residents are encouraged to identify possible alternative routes or pathways prior to construction beginning.
The City will be providing regular updates on this website to identify timing of each phase.
The City will be flushing hydrants during the week of September 22-25th. Residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure and/or temporary discoloration. We appreciate your patience during this process, which is a routine maintenance item for municipal water systems.

Leaf pickup begins Monday, October 6, 2025, and will continue for seven (7) weeks through Monday, November 17, 2025.
Leaves should be raked curbside by 7:00 a.m. on Monday of each week and be free of sticks, debris and other obstructions.
Smart streetlights have been installed uptown which will begin operating 24/7 over the holiday weekend, pending necessary adjustments. The LED banners will remain off during this same time period. System adjustments will continue into next week, at which point the lights will return to a regular operating schedule. We appreciate your patience and understanding while City staff and contractors work to optimize the system.
Sealed proposals will be received by the City of Mount Vernon by the City Clerk at 213 First Street NW, Mount Vernon, Iowa 52314, until 2:00 p.m. on the 17th day of July, 2025, for the construction of the 2025 Sidewalk Improvements project.
The Cemetery Commission is hosting a hands-on workshop led by Gravestone Conservation Specialist John Heider during July 14-16, 2025. The workshops are free of charge and open to the public.
Mount Vernon’s City Hall, located at 213 1st St NW, is open 24/7 during times of extreme heat to serve as a cooling station.
